Did you know honey bees add over $15 billion in value to our nation’s crops, particularly specialty crops such as almonds and other nuts, berries, fruits, and vegetables? In all reality, honey bees enhance any garden because they increase the yields of plants that require pollination, they produce honey, and they are one of nature's most fascinating creatures to observe. Unfortunately, parasitic mites cause serious health problems for most varieties of honey bees. Learn about honey bee management and the benefits of honey bees in your garden during this exciting lecture. Join Bergen County Master Gardeners at the next meeting, to hear guest speaker Liz Bisaccio, a Master Gardener graduate, member of the N.J. Beekeeper’s Association and backyard beekeeper hobbyist. Liz maintains two working hives and will bring an observation box to the lecture. She will provide highlights of the modern bee hive, a typical honey bee colony, diseases of honey bees and a review of beekeeper’s clothing and equipment. The presentation will held be on Tuesday May 25, 2010 at 7:30pm, at One Bergen Plaza, County Place, Hackensack on the 1st floor. Meetings are open to all interested gardeners, free of charge, and refreshments are served, starting at 7pm.
