"Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine to the soul." -- Luther Burbank, 1849-1926
Everyone I talk with echoes the same message -- it can’t be June, I still have pots and flats to plant! Yes, it snuck up (no grammarian comments please) on us all. So like you, I need to get back in the yard and will keep to the facts here. (In truth, our newsletter editor is doing the Mom version of Fodor‘s and will be traveling most of the summer.) So this is the only newsletter until September. PRINT AND SAVE. If you have any questions, address them now. It may be difficult to contact members as the summer progresses.
There was a small but lively turnout for the bus trip on May 25th. The Grounds for Sculpture was very interesting and fun, plus everyone found something to buy at the first stop, The Farm at Green Village Nursery. More details will be given at the June 9th general meeting.
Dora once again made a floral basket and presented it on behalf of the club at the community Memorial Day service. She has done this tribute to our service men and women for several years now and deserves our thanks.
Early June - watch for an email from me re: baking cookies for the refreshment table the day of the tour. Recalculated and only one batch per member should be adequate. Irene and I have selected easy recipes plus baking ahead and freezing them is fine.
June 9th - general meeting at McFaul. Come at 7PM to socialize; program “Planning the Mixed Garden Border” begins at 7:30. Speaker is Mark Zukovich, owner of a landscaping firm and horticultural adjunct professor. Hostesses that got a reprive in May are: Amy Mueller, Susan Gurak, Ginny Fleming, Wendy Sowa-Maldarelli.
June 10th 9AM – Gardening at Zabriskie: Please mark your calendar to come. This will be an all out effort to make Zabriskie gorgeous for the tour in 6 days. Besides grounds work, how about washing lawn furniture, sweeping, etc. Just show up and Marijke will put you to good use. Better yet, call her 891-5916 so you can discuss what to do and you can bring supplies.
June 16th, 10-4, the Wyckoff House and Garden Tour which we are co-sponsoring with the Trustees of the Zabriskie House to benefit the Zabriskie House. Fundraisers don’t get any easier than this - just buy a ticket and come. A lot of effort went into planning this and the 4 homes and 5 gardens featured are special. In fact, 2 of the gardens are spectacular!
July 14th, noon - New Members’Luncheon at Fran DiGiorgio’s. New members come as guests of the club and regular members pay $10. Bring a chair and a dessert to share as we get better acquainted with Aida, Andrea, Beverly, Donna, Joanne, Lois, Maureen and Sam. We are placing a per person deli order, so it is imperative to RSVP to Fran at 891-6309 or Fran167192@aol.com by Friday, July 9 since an exact count of attendees is necessary.
August 11, noon - 3D party at my place. Bring , a Dip or Dessert (with serving utensils), take a Dip in the pool, bring a garden tool to Dip the handle in neon paint so it is less prone to being lost in the garden. Plus, remember a CHAIR. Again, RSVP by Aug. 6 by calling me at 891-1462 or email bandb.douglas@verizon.net so we can have enough beverages and ice on hand.
Added bonus social: Sept. 1, noon - Bea’s lakehouse. It’s become a regular treat to enjoy the view from the house or the dock and Bea promises that the lake is fine for swimming. This is another bring a lunch dish or dessert to share and call her at 327-4012 or bmaus@optonline.net if you are going. Parking is limited so carpools form in the lot across from the Wyckoff Library.
Just a reminder, all of our summer socials are member only events and please no children. If you still want to join us and haven‘t paid your renewal dues, late fees now bring the dues to $37. Otherwise, this is your last newsletter and you will be removed from all the contact lists. It is understandable if your circumstances changed and you can’t continue with us at the moment. If you are not renewing because the club is not meeting your expectations, feel free to call me with your feedback. In either case, hope you come back at some time in the future.
As everyone should be aware by now, the general membership voted to move our general meetings from the 2nd to the 3rd Wednesday of the month starting in September. Plus, as announced we can no longer conduct our evening meetings at McFaul. Having said that, we start with a change since there is no meeting place available on the 3rd Wednesday in September for our general meeting. Therefore, the September general meeting will be on TUESDAY, 9/14 at the Larkin House. All evening general meetings will be held at Larkin House which is located at 380 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff between Joshua and Kaitlyn Lane. There are stone pillars at the entrance and exit drives. If you have never been there, take the time over the summer to drive by and familiarize yourself with the setting.
We’ve worked very hard this year with the club and I thank you for the effort. Now it is time to play; hope to see all of you at least once over the summer.
Fondly,
Barb |
